Mother's Day: 2010

Sixteen years ago, I celebrated my first Mother's Day. It was a beautiful day in Chapel Hill, NC. It was a Sunday--just like today--we went to Church with my parents that morning at the Chapel Hill Bible Church and we dedicated a teeny tiny Bit in front of the whole congregation. She was weenie peenie, less than 8 weeks old and had already won my heart forever. We had a delicious meal in the dining room--Bear and Goggy constantly had incredible meals for every occasion. I miss our family meals. Burke worked nights the whole first two years of our marriage and I ate dinner more with Bear, David and Ferf, after I was married than I did in the whole decade leading up to my becoming a mama. I think David was perplexed as to why I was there every night.

One of my dearest friends in the world was with us that Mother's Day 1994, at Bear's house, Amy was pregnant with her first child that we had prayed and prayed she would conceive. I suppose Mark was on call because she was husband-less. Ames told me that afternoon, that if we went to Ben and Jerry's, we would get a FREE Ice Cream Cone for being a mama. I don't think we made it down Franklin Street that day--but it was a day I'll remember forever. I was a YOUNG thing.....27 years young with a tiny baby .

There have been many memorable Mother's Days--I usually have Bear in my married with children memories--this is my fifth Mother's Day without the Bear. My first Mother's Day without Sisty. My 13th without Jammy. The woman that shaped my entire being.

Lord--Please tell Jammy, Bear and Sisty that I miss them and hope that eternity with you is treating them well. Tell them I'm not as angry. At least not today.

The Pods were very busy this Mother's Day season. The PODS that I am charged with raising--came out in full force. I suppose Mother's Day began last night with a family trip to the DPAC in Durham, to see the show, Wicked. It was great. Bit, Bo, Ferf, Boom, Big Daddy and I all had a quick bite to eat on the downtown loop and off to the theatre we went.... Toots spent the night with Pia and Jorge.

We were awoken early with Ferf bringing Bojangles. Yummo. As I inhaled my Bacon, Egg and Cheese biscuit, I thought to myself just how good it tasted and hot wonderful my cup-of-joe was. Toots was retrieved by B. Daddy.

The presents were thoughtful beyond measure. For starters--B. Daddy wasn't involved in the driving to Target and the nail salon. Bit took Toots to Target and directed her in the shopping. It was classic Toots--she used her own personal gift card to purchase my gifts, so I don't even feel like I bought it. Bit got me the perfect gift--A pedi/mani gift certificate. I could get one of those for every birthday, Mother's Day, Valentines, And Christmas for the rest of my life.

But it was a tiny Bo that managed to create the shocker Mother's Day 2010 gift....For the last 3 years+, the fenced in area behind our shed, aka: the bodega, has become a waste pit of good earth (compliments of Ferf) and WEEDS that could strangle a human. Horrible surface conditions to grow anything. Bo determined this would be a GARDEN YEAR--so, he started very early and worked all day--B. Daddy and he, borrowed Papa's tiller and worked more. They shopped at Lowe's and by sundown the most wonderful summer garden had been planted. Add some herbs to the deck planters and Summer can come.....

It was a Great Mother's Day.
